How credit-report disputes work

Turn a specific concern into a documented request for review.

Identify the error clearly

Explain what you believe is inaccurate, why, and how it should be corrected. The CFPB recommends contacting both the credit reporting company and the company that supplied the disputed information.

Keep supporting records

Include copies of relevant documents and keep your own copy of the dispute and the responses. Make sure each item can be matched to the entry on your report.

Review the result

Read the response carefully and compare it with the information you disputed. A dispute is a request to investigate accuracy; it does not guarantee deletion or a higher score. Review any generated letter for accuracy before sending it.
